New Executive Council Member – Upsilon Pi Epsilon welcomes Dr. Daniela Stan-Raicu, UPE Chapter Adviser at DePaul University (Chicago), as the newest member of the UPE Executive Council. Dr. Raicu will serve a five-year term on Council from 2008-2013. She holds a tenured faculty position in Computer Science at DePaul. Dr. Raicu has a B.S. degree from the University of Bucharest, the M.A. degree from Wayne State University and the Ph.D. in Computer Science from Oakland University.
UPE Scholarship Awards – Applications for the 2008 UPE scholarship awards are due on June 15, 2008. Awards range from $750 to $1000. Council expects to present up to 15 awards in 2008. UPE members are encouraged to apply for one of these awards. Scholarship application forms can be downloaded from the UPE web site.
Each UPE chapter can submit one undergraduate and one graduate application. Completed applications must be forwarded to the headquarters of UPE by the chapter adviser. Prospective applicants should note that an incomplete application cannot be considered for an award. To receive the cash award, each scholarship recipient must be registered for a regular course of study at a college or university in Fall 2008 or Spring 2009. Awards will be announced on October 1, 2008.
ICPC – International Collegiate Programming Contest – The ICPC World Finals for 2008 was held at the Banff Fairmont Resort in Canada on April 6-10, 2008. One hundred teams from around the Globe participated at this event. It should be noted that UPE held the first programming contest at Texas A&M University in the 1970’s and worked with the ACM to coordinate the first nationwide contest finals in 1977. Today, the ICPC has become a worldwide event with excellent leadership from Dr. Bill Poucher of Baylor University and financial sponsorship by IBM.
UPE has always been an active participant in ICPC activities. Each team at the World Finals receives a $300 cash award from UPE. In addition, a team from an institution that has an active chapter of UPE receives an additional cash award of $450 from UPE.

Ordering UPE Memorabilia – A large number of UPE members order graduation memorabilia that signify their membership in UPE. The most common items ordered are the Stole, Cord and Medallion. All of these items are available and can be viewed, along with ordering instructions, by going to the UPE website. |
