NEWSBRIEF DECEMBER 2007 - UPE Annual Convention
The 2008 Annual Convention of UPE will be held in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, March 15, 2008. UPE has made arrangements with the ACM SIGCSE Conference Board to hold the UPE annual meeting in conjunction with the 2008 SIGCSE Convention.
Event: UPE Annual Convention
Date: March 15, 2008
Place: Oregon Convention Center (Time & room TBA) Portland Oregon
Hotel: Hilton Portland (ACM Convention headquarters)
The 2008 Convention will be the first UPE Annual Convention that will be held outside the confines of the ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) World Finals. The Executive Council will continue to assist in contest activities and provide financial support for the ICPC World Finals despite this change in venue for the UPE convention. We consider this alliance with the SIGCSE to be a positive change for UPE since a large number of students and faculty from the various computing-related academic departments in North America attend the SIGCSE Convention. Thus, we expect a significant number of UPE members to be present at the SIGCSE Convention. We invite all student, alumni, and faculty members of UPE to join us at the Portland convention.
Convention Highlights:
- A major highlight of the UPE annual convention is the presentation of the ABACUS Award, UPE’s most prestigious award. ABACUS awardees are individuals with outstanding professional credentials who, over several years, have provided extensive support and leadership for student-related activities in the Computing and Information Disciplines. The name of the award recipient is announced at the UPE Convention. Council requires that the individual who receives this award must be present at the Portland convention for this formal presentation. The most recent ABACUS Award was presented in April 2006 to Dr. David Patterson, Professor of Computer Science at U. C., Berkeley and past president of the ACM.
- There will be one vacancy in the UPE Executive Council. Interested candidates are encouraged to apply.
- UPE chapters who are represented at the 2008 Convention are encouraged to make a very brief (5 minutes or less) report on their chapter activities. UPE will present a $100 payment to each chapter representative who makes a presentation at this convention. The chapter representative is expected to send her/his one-page convention report to upe@acm.org before March 5, 2008. All chapters reports will be posted in the UPE website after the convention.
- Members of the UPE Executive Council will be at this Portland event. We invite all of you to come to our Convention and meet the members of Council.
Vacancy in the Executive Council
There will be one vacancy in the UPE Executive Council. Council members serve a five-year term of office and are elected by chapter representatives at the annual convention of UPE. The new council member begins her/his term immediately after the 2008 Convention. The elected council member serves without pay, but may be reimbursed for UPE-related expenses including travel to two council meetings each year and voluntary participation in the staff activities of the ICPC World Finals.
The Council candidate must come from an institution that has a chapter of UPE and must show that she/he is an active member of UPE. Each candidate is expected to send a letter of interest in this position along with a copy of a detailed resume to the UPE Executive Director no later than March 1, 2008.
Additional information on UPE Executive Council membership can be found in the UPE Constitution. You can also send related questions to the Executive Director at upe@acm.org or to the other members of the UPE Executive Council.
