NEWSBRIEF FEBRURARY 2008 - UPE Annual Convention
INVITATION From Council - We invite all UPE members and their guests to attend the 2008 UPE National Convention (in conjunction with the 2008 SIGCSE Technical Symposium) in Portland, Oregon on March 15, 2008.
Event: 2008 UPE National Convention
Location: Hilton Hotel, Portland
Date/Time: Saturday, March 15, 2008 at 3:00 P.M.
This will be the first annual meeting of UPE that will be held in conjunction with the SIGCSE Technical Symposium. We expect a good turnout since there will be a significant number of faculty and students from the various programs in the computing sciences in North America who will be in attendance at this technical symposium. Conference agenda highlights include detailed reports on the activities of UPE chapters and the UPE Executive Council during the past year.
A copy of the tentative agenda is shown on the back page. One notable item is the Chapter Reports. We encourage chapter representatives to make a brief presentation that will summarize the activities of their chapters. Council will present a $100 cash award to each individual who volunteers to make this presentation. Each presentation will be limited to a three- to five-minute report. You are requested to send a draft of your presentation to upe@acm.org prior to this convention.
We will also be discussing problem and opportunity areas that are under discussion by Council. We welcome audience participation in these discussions.
The final action item on the agenda relates to the election of a new UPE Executive Council member. If you wish to become a candidate for this position, there is still time to send in your application. Include a cover letter along with your resume and send these items via email to upe@acm.org. Applications must be received by March 1, 2008.
Returning Funds to Chapters – The $50 per member fee that chapters paid in 2007 includes a reimbursement of $5 per paid member that will be returned to the chapter in 2008. Notices will be mailed out to chapters in March to inform you of the amount of reimbursement your chapter will receive from UPE. You will be requested to complete a response form that will allow you to designate the “payee name” for this check. If your chapter does not have a chapter bank account, the designated “payee” for this check will either be the chapter Adviser or your host department.
