NEWSBRIEF – January 2007

UPE’S 40TH Anniversary

2007 marks the 40th Anniversary of UPE.  We have gone from one chapter in 1967 to over 230 chapters today.  UPE will have a booth at the 2007 SIGCSE Conference that will be held at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center and Cincinnati Marriott at River Center on March 7-10, 2007.  Look for the UPE’s 40th Anniversary banner. Dr. Jeff Popyack, UPE President, will be in charge of the UPE booth at the SIGCSE.

New Membership Fee for UPE – $50 effective January 1, 2007

As noted in our September 2006 Newsbrief, the one-time fee per UPE member has been raised to $50 effective for all members who join UPE beginning in January 2007.  Membership in UPE is for a lifetime.

Scholarship Applications for 2007

This is the first announcement for the 2007 UPE Scholarship Awards.  Applications are due on June 15, 2007.  Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the UPE website.

Vacancy in the UPE Executive Countil

There will be a vacancy in the UPE Executive Council.  Council member election will take place at the UPE business meeting that will be held at the ICPC World Finals in Tokyo, Japan on March 11-16, 2007.  Interested candidates must submit a letter of application and resume to the UPE Headquarters (c/o Orlando Madrigal) no later than March 1, 2007.  Note that candidates for Council must be present at the UPE business meeting in Tokyo.  Details of the ICPC in Tokyo can be obtained from the website below. http://icpc.baylor.edu/icpc/finals/default.htm

UPE National Convention – beginning in 2008

UPE is exploring the possibility of scheduling the 2008 UPE Annual Convention in conjunction with the SIGCSE Annual Conference.  At present, the UPE Convention is held during the ACM ICPC (International Collegiate Programming Contest) World Finals.  Scheduling the UPE Convention during the ICPC made sense in earlier times since UPE originated the concept of the ICPC during the mid-1970’s as a special event for ACM student chapters.  ICPC has evolved into a worldwide event and its venue is no longer limited to the United States. The 2007 competition will be held in Tokyo, Japan.  Council considers it unrealistic to expect chapters to send delegates to a UPE Annual Convention that is held outside the United States.

Despite Council’a plan to move the UPE Annual Convention to a venue that is not tied to the ICPC, it should be noted that Council does not have any plan to reduce its support and participation in the ICPC.  Overall, Council’s goal for the UPE Convention is to have greater participation from chapters and this can only happen if this UPE annual meeting is held within the U.S.  We are considering other options for the Convention venue, in addition to the SIGCSE.  We welcome suggestions from all UPE members.  Please send your suggestions and comments to upe@acm.org.
