NEWSBRIEF SEPTEMBER 2007 - UPE Scholarship Awards

Each summer the Executive Council of Upsilon Pi Epsilon evaluates a large number of outstanding scholarship applicants at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.  All scholarship applicants were required to complete a comprehensive application form requiring each applicant to attach all college-level transcripts, UPE adviser recommendation and statements related to their contributions to their respective UPE chapters and related student activities at their university, as well as their long-term plans for the profession.  A summary of the 2007 scholarship awardees is listed below.

UPE Scholarship Awards

$500 UPE Award:

$1,000 UPE Awards:

Undergraduate
      John Garrett Flowers, University of South Carolina

UPE Named Awards:

UPE Dan Drew $1,250 award went to Yiu Yu Ho, graduate student at the University of Central Florida

UPE Jim Nolen $1,250 award went to Robert Stark, undergraduate student at Michigan Technological University

UPE/IEEE-CS Scholarship Awards ($500 each; funded by UPE and administered by the IEEE-CS).  UPE donates $2,000 each year to the IEEE-CS and the IEEE-CS presents four $500 cash awards to outstanding student members of the society.  The IEEE-CS announced two $500 Awards in January 2007.  These awards were presented to Juan Gillermo Gomez Torres (Santiago de Cali University, Columbia) and Md. Raihan Masud (Kuhlna University of Engineering & Technology, Bangladesh).

UPE/ACM Scholarship Awards – (Two $1,000 Awards).  UPE donates $2,000 to the ACM Scholarship fund.  These awards will be announced at the end of 2007.

All of the above scholarship recipients will be formally recognized by UPE at the March 2007 UPE Convention which will be held in Portland, Oregon in conjunction with the ACM SIGCSE Conference.
