UPE Newsbrief February 2006

UPE Annual Convention - The 2006 UPE Annual Convention will be held at the Hilton Palacio del Rio Hotel in San Antonio, Texas on April 10, 2006 in conjunction with the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Sponsored by IBM. Convention details will be announced during the ICPC/UPE session on April 10th. ICPC activities take place April 9-11, 2006.

A UPE/IBM reception for ICPC attendees will be held at 6:30 PM on April 10, 2006. All UPE members and programming contest participants are invited to these UPE functions in San Antonio. Convention participants will include members of the UPE Executive Council, ICPC and IBM managers, and several volunteer staff members from Baylor University, the host institution for the 2006 ICPC.

Executive Council Member Election - There will be one vacant Executive Council position beginning on April 15, 2006. Interested candidates need to send a comprehensive curriculum vitae to the UPE International Secretary no later than March 10, 2006. A statement of intent and interest in this position must accompany this application. Council member election will be held during the UPE Annual Convention in San Antonio. Each candidate is expected to give a very brief speech prior to the election process. UPE Council members serve five-year terms. Council members are expected to attend a minimum of two Executive Council meetings each year. In addition, a council member is expected to visit at least one chapter each year where he/she serves as the Council representative at a new chapter (charter) ceremony.

Scholarship Applications - Active members of UPE are encouraged to submit their scholarship applications. UPE will be presenting cash awards of $750 to $1,000 during the current academic year. Scholarship applications can be downloaded from the UPE website. All applications are due on June 15, 2006.

Chapter Information - Data on UPE chapters need to be updated each time there is a change in your officers. Chapter adviser and officers are encouraged to send information on these chapter changes to UPE. This is especially important each time we send out UPE updates via postal mail. We wish to insure that current advisers and officers are the recipients of printed news from UPE.

UPE members are encouraged to visit the UPE website on a regular basis in order to stay abreast of UPE news and activities.
