This photograph, published in the October 1968 issue of Communications of the ACM, captures an important moment in the early history of Upsilon Pi Epsilon (UPE).
The photograph features three individuals who played roles in the early development and recognition of UPE:
- Left: Dr. Leland H. Williams, Auburn University — ACM Southeast Regional Representative and former Chairman of the ACM Committee on Student Membership and Student Chapters.
- Center: Prof. Dan Drew, Texas A&M University — faculty advisor to UPE at Texas A&M and the individual who made the presentation shown in the photograph.
- Right: Barry Bateman, Texas A&M University — president of the student chapter and a charter member of UPE.
In the photograph, Professor Drew presents Dr. Williams with a certificate recognizing his contributions to the founding of the UPE chapter at Texas A&M and his cooperation in helping organize UPE as a national organization.
Published only a short time after UPE’s founding at Texas A&M in 1967, this photograph provides a valuable contemporary record of the people who helped establish UPE and supported its growth from a university honor society into a national organization.
